Why Wellbeing at School Can’t Wait

Across Europe, psychological stress among secondary school students has been rising steadily. Teachers are facing the same pressures — twice over — as they navigate their own wellbeing while supporting increasingly overwhelmed learners.

But here’s the thing: wellbeing isn’t just the school counsellor’s job. It’s everyone’s. That’s the starting point of the WELL3 project.

Grounded in a whole-school approach, WELL3 involves every stakeholder — school leaders, teachers, students, and parents — in building a healthier school culture. Rather than offering generic advice, the project is developing practical, evidence-based tools rooted in William Glasser’s Five Basic Needs: Survival, Love & Belonging, Power, Freedom, and Fun.

The idea is simple but powerful: when these fundamental needs are met, people thrive. When they’re not, stress, disengagement, and conflict follow.

WELL3 is currently recruiting 10 secondary schools across Sweden, Austria, and Portugal to pilot its tools during the 2026–2027 school year. If your school is interested in joining, stay tuned for more details.

Because a school that cares for its people is a school that works.
