The De-escalation Duo (Shadowing)

This method is a safety concept for parent-teacher meetings where teachers are systematically accompanied by a second person (colleague, school management, or social worker) during potentially difficult or conflict-prone appointments.

✍️ Brigitta Rupp, PBÖ
⏱️ Duration 1 school hour
🔄 Frequency Over a longer period
👥 Target Group Teachers, School Management, Parents
🎯

Purpose

Applying this Shadowing method significantly increases the teacher's sense of security.
The second person serves as a neutral observer, minute-taker, or emotional support.
This prevents escalation and protects the teacher's professional integrity.

✅

Use and Learning Outcomes

  • 1. Increasing the teacher's emotional security and confidence.

Duo Debriefing

💭

Reflection & Tips

Reflection

Did I feel safer due to the presence of my colleague?
Was I able to react more calmly knowing I wasn't alone?

Tips for Implementation

The companion should be positioned slightly to the side in the room.
Important: The companion should not interrupt the teacher; their primary role is a stabilizing presence.

"The Anchor Phrase Principle": The duo should pre-arrange a specific phrase to neutrally interrupt the conversation if the teacher feels overwhelmed or needs a moment to breathe (e.g., "I suggest we take a quick look at the minutes to summarize our current progress").
This provides the teacher with a "safety anchor" to regain composure without losing face.
